Well as like voor Joomla! I have ported my Google, Bing and Yahoo! verify tool to WordPress.
It works very easy in 5 simple steps:
1. Download the plugin, extract and upload it to your plugins folder on your server.
2. Activate the plugin.
3. Go to Settings, and Verify All.
4. Go to Google Webmaster Tools, Yahoo! SiteExplorer and Bing Webmaster Tools to get your verification/authentication information.
5. Enter the meta value on the Verify All page and Save Changes.

Verify for what?
Sorry, Verify for Google/Bing and Yahoo webmaster tools. So they can verify your site.
Many Thanks for writing this simple script.
As a total non-coder, I tried re-writing the header.php file but to no avail.
Isn’t that why I use WordPress?
I do need to see my site how google sees it for future improvements, so the verification is important to me.

Do I just copy the long string of numbers including “” or the whole of the code?

If you mean the codes of google / yahoo and or bing. Don’t copy the “” into it.
